70. Al-Ma'aarij

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍۢ وَاقِعٍۢ1

A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen

Sa ala saaa'ilum bi'azaa binw-waaqi'

لِّلْكَٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌۭ2

To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.

Lilkaafireen laisa lahoo daafi'

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ3

[It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent.

Minal laahi zil ma'aarij

تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍۢ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍۢ4

The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.

Ta'rujul malaaa'ikatu war Roohu ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoo khamseena alfa sanah

فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًۭا جَمِيلًا5

So be patient with gracious patience.

Fasbir ssabran jameelaa

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًۭا6

Indeed, they see it [as] distant,

Inaahum yarawnahoo ba'eedaa

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًۭا7

But We see it [as] near.

Wa naraahu qareebaa

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ8

On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,

Yawma takoonus samaaa'u kalmuhl

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ9

And the mountains will be like wool,

Wa takoonul jibaalu kal'ihn

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًۭا10

And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,

Wa laa yas'alu hameemun hameemaa

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ11

They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children

Yubassaroonahum; ya waddul mujrimu law yaftadee min 'azaabi yawma'izim bibaneeh

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ12

And his wife and his brother

Wa saahibatihee wa akheeh

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ13

And his nearest kindred who shelter him

Wa faseelathil latee tu'weeh

وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًۭا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ14

And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.

Wa man fil ardi jamee'an summa yunjeeh

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ15

No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],

Kallaa innahaa lazaa

نَزَّاعَةًۭ لِّلشَّوَىٰ16

A remover of exteriors.

Nazzaa'atal lishshawaa

تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ17

It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]

Tad'oo man adbara wa tawallaa

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ18

And collected [wealth] and hoarded.

W jama'a fa aw'aa

۞ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا19

Indeed, mankind was created anxious:

Innal insaana khuliqa haloo'aa

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًۭا20

When evil touches him, impatient,

Izaa massahush sharru jazoo'aa

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا21

And when good touches him, withholding [of it],

Wa izaa massahul khairu manoo'aa

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ22

Except the observers of prayer -

Illal musalleen

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ23

Those who are constant in their prayer

Allazeena hum 'alaa Salaatihim daaa'imoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّۭ مَّعْلُومٌۭ24

And those within whose wealth is a known right

Wallazeena feee amwaalihim haqqum ma'loom

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ25

For the petitioner and the deprived -

Lissaaa 'ili walmahroom

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ26

And those who believe in the Day of Recompense

Wallazeena yusaddiqoona bi yawmid Deen

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ27

And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -

Wallazeena hum min 'azaabi Rabbihim mushfiqoon

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍۢ28

Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -

Inna 'azaaba Rabbihim ghairu maamoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَٰفِظُونَ29

And those who guard their private parts

Wallazeena hum lifuroo jihim haafizoon

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ30

Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -

Illaa 'alaaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aymaanuhum fainnahum ghairu maloomeen

فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ31

But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -

Famanib taghaa waraaa'a zaalika fa ulaaa'ika humul 'aadoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ32

And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive

Wallazeena hum li amaa naatihim wa 'ahdihim raa'oon

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ33

And those who are in their testimonies upright

Wallazeena hum bishahaadaatihim qaaa'imoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ34

And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:

Wallazeena hum 'alaa salaatihim yuhaafizoon

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ مُّكْرَمُونَ35

They will be in gardens, honored.

Ulaaa'ika fee jannaatim mukramoon

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ36

So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad],

Famaa lil lazeena kafaroo qibalaka muhti'een

عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ37

[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?

'Anil yameeni wa 'anish shimaali 'izeen

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍۢ38

Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?

Ayatma'u kullum ri'im minhum anyyudkhala jannata Na'eem

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ39

No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.

Kallaaa innaa khalaq nahum mimmaa ya'lamoon

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ40

So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able

Falaaa uqsimu bi Rabbil mashaariqi wal maghaaribi innaa laqaadiroon

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ41

To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.

'Alaaa an nubaddila khairam minhum wa maa Nahnu bimasbooqeen

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ42

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -

Fazarhum yakhoodoo wa yal'aboo hattaa yulaaqoo yaw mahumul lazee yoo'adoon

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًۭا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍۢ يُوفِضُونَ43

The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.

Yawma yakhrujoona minal ajdaasi siraa'an ka anna hum ilaa nusubiny yoofidoon

خَٰشِعَةً أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۭ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ44

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.

Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillah; zaalikal yawmul lazee kaanoo yoo'adoon
